Congressman Austin Scott cosponsors bill to stop Congressional pay during a government shutdown

U.S. Congressman Austin Scott announced on Tuesday he has signed onto the Government Shutdown Fairness Act (H.R. 3160), which would prohibit members of Congress from receiving a salary during a government shutdown.

“It’s our duty as leaders in Washington to keep the government running,” said Rep. Scott. “The House has acted multiple times to keep the government open. Unfortunately, the Senate and the President’s refusal to negotiate has brought us to a government shutdown that is adversely impacting programs for veterans, seniors and many others. Until the Senate comes to the table and works with House Republicans to find a solution to end this shutdown, I don’t believe Members should get paid.”

The Government Shutdown Fairness Act (H.R. 3160) was introduced by Rep. Chris Collins (NY-27) and is consistent with the 27th Amendment in holding salaries in escrow until the end of this Congress.

Earlier this year, the Rep. Scott voted for the No Budget, No Pay Act of 2013 (H.R. 325), which said Members of Congress would not be paid unless they passed a budget. Following the passage of No Budget, No Pay, the Senate adopted a budget resolution for the first time in four years.
