WARNER ROBINS – The Houston County Commissioners celebrated their United Way campaign and approved the appointments of various board members in the most recent meeting.

“We’re a volunteer lead, volunteer-driven organization and the work that we can do in the community is based solely on the support that we get from our companies and our organizations,” United Way of Central Georgia President George McCanless said.

McCanless recognized Houston County Community Planner Jacob Cox at the meeting.

“Jake is on our board and has been an incredible supporter of United Way and he has been here for as long as I have been with United Way and we surely depend on him,” he said. “Jake, thank you and all the employees of the government for the incredible support.”

Chairman Dan Perdue then gave his remarks about their United Way campaign.

“I appreciate the generosity and the compassion of our employees and their contributions to the United Way,” he said. “You do good work, not only in Houston County but in the entire region, and I’m thankful that our employees choose to participate in the program that Mr. Cox coordinates and leads so well.”

After the minutes of the previous meeting were approved, it was on to new business.

The board approved a change order for the State Court and Sheriff’s Office remodel. This change order will affect the Investigation Division of the Sheriff’s Office.

“This is a pretty large change to the scope of the project and was never considered as part of the project until we neared the end and the Sheriff asked if we could give some consideration to remodeling this additional facility that was built back in 2000,” Perdue said. “At the time he mentioned putting it in his budget for the coming year, and I suggested that we go ahead and do it as a part of this project so that our contractors would not have to redeploy in the new year.”

Also in the meeting, the board approved two funds distributions.

One is the Development Authority. According to the agenda, this funds distribution will reduce the debt incurred from purchasing the Park Place Office Park.

The other funds distribution is going to Houston Healthcare to reimburse two new ambulances.

The Commissioners also approved various Board appointments in the most recent meeting.

Jessica Perdue, Jean Jones, and George Nunn have all been appointed to the Library Board effective July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2028.

Stacy Bright will be appointed to the Middle Flint Behavioral Healthcare Community Service Board effective May 21, 2024, to September 14, 2025.

Mikki Quinones will be appointed to the Department of Family and Children Services Board effective July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2029.

Christopher Stoner will be appointed to Region V EMS Board on July 1, 2024 to June 30, 2029.

Stacy Bright will also be appointed to the Mental Health Developmental Disabilities and Addictive Diseases Advisory Council Region 6 Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Disabilities Advisory Committee effective July 1, 2024, to December 31, 2026.

County employees can rejoice as the Commissioners approved an additional day off on the Friday after July 4.

“I also received this motion last year, so I appreciate the opportunity to earn a lot of brownie points from the staff of Houston County,” Commissioner Shane Gottwalls said.

“We do not do this every year, but typically when it falls on a Friday we will give it,” Perdue said.

The next Houston County Commissioners’ meeting will be held June 4, 9 a.m. at the Houston County Courthouse on Perry Parkway. To view the minutes of this meeting in full, go to houstoncountyga.org/commissioner/meeting-minutes.cms
