Tuesday, Houston County Commissioner Tom McMichael made an announcement regarding the March 2020 election.

At the monthly board meeting, he announced he would not seek re-election at the end of his term in 2020. “At the end of this term, I will have served on the Houston County Board of Commissioners for 28 years. I thank former Commission Chairman Sherill Stafford for that. A lot of great things have taken place in the county. I’ve been through three chairmans, all who have brought a lot to the table. But I will not be seeking re-election for 2020. I pledge my support to the person who will be succeeding me, as well as the other commissioners. This was a very hard decision.”

Chairman Tommy Stalnaker expressed his appreciation for McMichael.

“I know this decision has weighed on your (McMichael) mind for a long time,” Stalnaker said. “I thank you for your service to this county and what you have done for this county. I also thank you for your friendship and for always supporting me. There is a lot to be done in 2020 and you will be a vital part of it. I will save more remarks for a later time, but I do thank you for you service.”

The commissioners expressed appreciation for McMichael. Commissioner Larry Thomson also announced earlier this month that he would not seek re-election either.

“I know who ever is elected to Tom’s seat will have a big pair of shoes to fill,” Thomson said. “He is the hardest working guy I have ever known. But we have had a good ride and I wish him all the best.”
