CENTERVILLE – The city of Centerville received a $50,000 grant to expand recreation areas.
Congressman Sanford Bishop announced on Friday, June 21, that the city along with the City of Byron will receive grants from the National Park Service.
According to City Accountant Carol Harrison, the grant was from the Department of Natural Resources Land and Water Conservation fund. The press release also says the grants were made possible through the Local Assistance Program.
Harrison said the grant will be going towards Center Park and the city will be purchasing additional playground equipment for children 10 and under. The city also plans to purchase sensory and inclusionary equipment for kids of all ages.
She shares Mayor John Harley and council are excited to be able to expand the park, since many activities are hosted there.
“We serve a lot of the community, not just the citizens of Centerville but we serve members of all of Houston County and people in middle Georgia who want to come visit and they are excited to enhance the park with some additional equipment,” she said.
According to Harrison, the equipment is worth up to $100,000 and a lot of work will be put into the park.
Mayor Harley released a statement to Congressman Bishop’s office sharing his gratitude for the grant and how they plan to improve Center Park.
“The City of Centerville is very appreciative and excited for this wonderful opportunity to partner with the National Park Service. The city will use the $50,000 federal grant to enhance its crown jewel, Center Park, by providing new playground equipment for children under 10 as well as additional equipment that provides sensory and inclusionary activities for people of all ages. Center Park is enjoyed by people throughout the Centerville community and the entire Middle Georgia area. A huge shout out and thanks goes out to Congressman Bishop and the Land and Water Conservation Fund State and Local Assistance Program,” Harley said.
