Christmas at the Square:A Perry Community Tradition with Meaning

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Ever wait for an answer to a text, only to look back at your phone and see that you forgot to hit “Send”?   All of us get to wear the Captain Obvious title at times, having overlooked the obvious.

One might think that a day known as Christmas, would make it pretty obvious what the celebration was all about. Yet, one glance at the bulk of what takes place during the month of December, can seem hollow of the day’s focus.

Not so for a memorable, family-friendly, and free Christmas event that has taken place in downtown Perry for many decades.

If you’ve never been, Perry’s Christmas at the Square is worth your time.

Christmas at the Square is held each year on the first Sunday of December at 6 pm on The Square of the historic downtown courthouse.  This year, that is this Sunday, December 3rd at 6 pm.

What’s unique about Christmas at the Square?

What sets Perry apart, is its decades-old tradition of reading the Christmas story aloud from the Bible in Luke 2, interspersed with the community singing of well-known Christmas hymns.  The event is sponsored by the Perry Ministerial Association, made up of the local churches in the community.

At Christmas at the Square in Perry, the crowd becomes the community Christmas choir on Sunday, December 3rd on the front lawn of the downtown courthouse.

You can bring your own folding chair, or simply stand, for the brief program that lasts around 30 minutes.  You’re welcome to bring your own candle, to make the Christmas hymn sing a candlelight event.  The program is not all that long, so don’t be late!   Feeling the cool of the evening?  Help yourself to a free cup of hot chocolate always served at the event.

It’s families with kids in strollers, singles and couples, youngsters and senior citizens.   It’s Perry at its best – keeping alive a wonderful tradition and focusing on Christ, the reason for the season.

In an ever-changing world, Christmas is about the God who created our universe, loving us enough to send the gift we truly needed – a Savior from sin.  It’s standing together with people from all walks of life in our community and singing words that are deserving of remembering during December and all the year:

“Hark the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King!

Peace on earth and mercy mild, God and sinners reconciled!”

Make plans to join in and take part in an event that is food for your soul… Christmas at the Square in downtown Perry, December 3rd at 6 pm!
