Christmas at the Square: A unique family event

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Looking for a memorable Christmas event that you won’t find the likes of elsewhere? Well, look no further than Perry’s “Christmas at the Square.”

It’s held on Sunday, December 5 at 6 p.m. at the old historic courthouse lawn downtown. It’s held just one day after the Perry Christmas parade, which takes place on Saturday, December 4 at 10 a.m.

What’s unique and unforgettable about Christmas at the Square? It does have some elements that you might find elsewhere. For example, Mayor Randall Walker will be flipping the switch for the lighting of the city Christmas tree.

But what sets Perry apart, is its decades-old tradition of reading the Christmas story aloud from Luke 2, interspersed with the community singing of well-known Christmas hymns.

Maybe you’ve seen a video or two of events in basketball or hockey arenas, where the microphone system failed during the singing of “The National Anthem”, and the crowd stepped in and took over the singing? Now you can be part of something similar.

At Christmas at the Square in Perry, the entire community steps up and becomes a Christmas choir on Sunday, December 5 on the front lawn of the downtown courthouse.

The location isn’t hard to find. Just get near downtown and follow the path of the luminaries that are lit for several blocks surrounding, by Boy Scout Troop 96. That alone is worth a photo.

Feeling the cool of the evening? Help yourself to a free cup of hot chocolate always served at the event.

You can bring your own folding chair, or simply stand, for the brief program that lasts around 30 minutes. Yep, it’s not long, so don’t be late!

It’s families with kids in strollers, singles and couples, youngsters and senior citizens. It’s Perry at its best – keeping alive a wonderful tradition that reminds us of this.

In an ever-changing world, Christmas is about the God who created our universe, loving us enough to send the gift we truly needed – a Savior from sin. It’s standing together with people from all walks of life in our community and singing words that are deserving of keeping in mind during December and all the year:

“Hark the herald angels sing, “Glory to the newborn King! Peace on earth and mercy mild God and sinners reconciled!”

Make plans to join in and take part in an event that is food for your soul . . .Christmas at the Square in downtown Perry.
