Chip’n Away, local organizations, present Army veteran with recliner
The event was held this weekend at Turner’s Furniture in Bonaire.

BONAIRE — In partnership with a local business and local non-profit, Chip’n Away at Heart Disease held a special event last weekend to raise awareness about heart disease and its impact on families. The event awarded a deserving veteran with a unique opportunity, highlighting the organization’s commitment to community and care.
“Heart health isn’t just a February focus, it’s a year-round priority,” Cynthia Malone, executive director and co-founder of Chip ‘n Away at Heart Disease, said.
Billy Sparks, an Army Reserve veteran, was presented with a recliner by Malone at the event. Sparks was also the recipient of a home from Habitat for Humanity during their Veterans Build in March.
“I’m thankful for this, everything. I’m just really blessed. Getting this out of nowhere is truly a blessing,” Sparks said.
Stress management plays an important role in heart health, said Malone. Sparks expressed his gratitude for the gift and his excitement about the recliner’s potential to be a key tool in managing stress.
“I feel like this is going to give me a nice comfort, just sit up, recline and enjoy the football games,” Sparks said.
Sparks adds the furniture to an already full house. After a five-year process, Sparks was granted custody of his siblings. Habitat and Chip’n Away’s efforts were a blessing for Sparks, who said it’s important to persevere.
“Never give up on what you love; fight for what you love and you’ll never lose,” Sparks said.
Chip’n Away, founded by the late Coach Narleski “Chip” Malone, raises awareness about heart disease and its effects on families in Warner Robins and surrounding communities.
The organization held the giveaway event in partnership with Suffered in Silence and Turner’s Furniture. Suffered in Silence is a nonprofit organization that provides meals, shelter, and emotional support to veterans and others in need.
Turner’s Furniture, a family-owned business serving South Georgia and North Florida for over 110 years, has been an active supporter of local initiatives since the opening of its new Bonaire location.
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention states that heart disease is responsible for almost 20% of deaths in the United States, making it a primary cause of mortality. Malone emphasizes that adopting healthier habits like increasing physical activity, improving diet, and managing stress can significantly improve heart health.
Chip’n Away at Heart Disease encourages everyone to prioritize their heart health. For more information on their initiatives or to volunteer, visit chipnaway.com.
