CORDELE, Ga. — The Georgia Horseshoe Pitchers’ Association has officially started their season, and Houston County has some skin in the game — the Perry Horseshoe Pitchers Club are working to make this years’ competition their own. Saturday, April 1 marked the beginning of the season with the Cordele Kickoff.

Dale Marteney took the gold in the 30-Foot Championship, finishing in first with a 5-1 record. Marshal Little came in second with a record of 4-2, and Frank Harris took third with a record of 3-2. Perry’s competitor, George Schmidt, came up short; though he maintained a ringer percentage of 44.50, he was unable to bring home the W in any of the five games he played.

Burned in the 30-Foot Championship, Perry brought it back in the 40-Foot Competition. Jeff Coile took first with a 5-0 record, and Jim McElveen took second with a record of 3-2; Scott Harris, of Perry, took third with same record, but with a higher ringer percentage: 27.5%. Another Perry competitor, Robbie Bloodworth, closed the competition in sixth, with a 1-4 record and a ringer percentage of 30%.

Perry dominated in the Class A competition, with John Rackley, Larry Myers Royce Byrd and Dan Sanders, all of Perry, taking home first, second, third and fourth place. Rackley, the first place winner, brought it home with a record of 5-0.

In Class B, Todd Holland took first with a 5-0 record, and James Rozier, of Perry, took second with a record of 3-2, and a ringer percentage of 24%.

Class C brought on more competition, with seven competitors rather than six. Willie T Hunter took home the gold with a 5-1 record, and Aubrey Walker followed closely after with a record of 4-2. Dennis Landing, of Perry, was able to rep well, bringing home third with a 4-2 record and a ringer percentage of 19.58%.

Closing the Cordele Kickoff was the Class D competition, with Mark Walton, of Perry, taking the lead — he finished with a 5-0 record, and a ringer percentage of 11%. Ashlynn McDonald took second and Dominic McDonald third, while two more Perryans, Jean Bullington and Jim Henderson, rounded it out in fifth and sixth.
