CGTC, Trinity partnership leads to new student housing complex
Technical colleges aren’t typically known for offering student housing, but officials with Central Georgia Technical College (CGTC) and Trinity School of Medicine announced Tuesday their partnership will be offering the third available student housing complex at any technical college in the state, according to CGTC Director of Marketing and Public Relations Amyre Makupson.
“It’s our hope — that with this [project] in terms of recruitment — out of all the technical colleges in Georgia, we are now the third to have student housing,” Makupson said. “Student housing for technical schools just isn’t a prominent or popular thing.
“So, what we’re hoping is, now that we have student housing, we can attract more students, not only from our area that want to get the college experience living away from home, but that also more students from across the country and international students — they can come here, live right on campus and not have to go looking for an apartment.”
According to a press release from the organizations, the 265-bed “Lofts at Houston Central” being built on Sutherlin Drive off State Route 96 in Warner Robins, will feature a private bed, bathroom, as well as a common area in each unit.
Along with this, the lofts will feature elevator access, gated on-site parking, fitness center, saltwater pool and 5,000 square feet of retail space — offering restaurants and other retail options, the release stated.
Makupson said Macon offers some housing options similar to these lofts, but this is a first for Warner Robins that should be completed by the end of 2022.
“There’s not a firm completion date because of all the delays that have happened from COVID,” she said. “We are anticipating being able to open it at least to the Trinity students by the fall and then some time during the fall months for the CGTC students — but no date has been set yet.”
Shortages in the market — such as with lumber — have slowed down construction, but officials hope the process may start to speed up soon, Makupson added.
“It will be [open] before the end of the year,” she said.
According to the press release, the housing project is a private development from partnerships between Houston Healthcare and government leaders of Houston County, along with Argus Eyed Partners and Sierra Development — both being real estate developers based in Macon.
“This new complex will provide an on-campus living experience for CGTC and Trinity students, will increase local vitality and will aid the local economy and the Houston County community in the endeavor to grow and attract the next generation of workforce talent,” according to the release.
