Central Georgia Tech Titans signs backcourt additions Owens and Dawson

The Central Georgia Tech Titans had a season to remember during the 2017-18 campaign. A season that left head coach Reco Dawson, assistant coach Byron Mincey and the Titans with a GCAA men’s tournament championship and a trip to the National Junior College Athletic Association tournament. That said, the time is now to add to the next year’s roster and the Titans are doing that with the additions of incoming freshman guard Champ Dawson, the coach’s son, and Andrew College transfer Ijon Owens.

Both will bloster a lineup that will return starters Juwaun Daniels and Anyeuir Castillo but lost all-conference and junior college All-American guard Michael Laster, a Bowling Green University commit, to graduation.

Owens, a 6’1” guard out of Crsip County High School, comes to the Titans after having won the conference freshman if the year last season. Owens averaged 18.6 points, nearly five rebounds and just under four assists per game for the Tigers. Against the Titans last season Owens averaged 24 points in the teams two games, including a 31-point game (13-18 FGs) in a 14-point loss in Cuthbert.

“Ijon will be a great addition to our program,” said [coach] Dawson in a recent press release. “He earned freshman of the year in opur conference and we expect big things from him.”

Both Daniels and Castillo were included in the conference’s all-freshman first team.

Dawson was a key cog of the 2018 Warner Robins High School 5A state championship team. His ability to play both guard positions will work well alongside returning sophomore guards DeJon Waters and Juvante Hayes.

The Titans were 25-9 overall with a 11-5 conference record last season.
