Centerville to vote on over 70 exemption
Residents of Centerville will decide in November whether they will keep the over 70 senior tax exemption in place or change the exemption so that seniors have to pay taxes on a portion of their assessed property values.
The city council voted unanimously Tuesday to put the issue up for vote in November’s general election. If passed, seniors age 70 and over would pay taxes on the value assessed over $50,000.
There has been much discussion over the past few weeks from citizens, mostly in opposition of changing the exemption. However, on Tuesday everyone present at the meeting was in favor of the proposal.
In other business, the council recognized Sgt. Scott Ferguson as Centerville’s police officer of the year.
Ferguson has been with the force since 2011. He previously served as a Houston County Sheriff’s Deputy for eight years before joining the Centerville Police Department.
