HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. —At approximately 4:15 p.m. on Wednesday, Houston County first responders were notified of a three-vehicle collision at the intersection of State Road 96 and Old Perry Road. Sheriff’s deputies, firemen and EMS personnel were on scene shortly after. The collision resulted in one vehicle catching on fire and one of the drivers being transported to the hospital.

According to sources within the Sheriff’s Office, an older model Toyota Camry containing two passengers was stationary while waiting to turn westbound onto SR 96 from Old Perry Road. Meanwhile, a Honda Civic containing one passenger traveled west on SR 96 and collided into a third vehicle, a black Toyota Camry containing 1 passenger, while it turned left onto Old Perry Road from SR 96. The stationary older model Camry was struck as a result of the initial collision. Following the impact of the crash, the black Camry caught fire.

First responders assisted the occupants of the black Toyota Camry in exiting the vehicle before the car was totally in flames, and firemen from the Houston County Fire Department worked to douse the flames. The driver of the Honda Civic was transported to the hospital for care, although they were stable and alert while on scene. First responders left the scene at approximately 5:15 p.m.

The cause of the crash remains to be under investigation. However, eyewitnesses report one or multiple vehicles ran a red light at the intersection. Assistant Fire Chief David Newman also reported that the specific cause of the vehicle fire remains to be under investigation as well.
