Burress breaks Bears home run record

After taking some time from the diamond, the Houston Bears are back in play. In fact, the Bears are finishing where they left off. Houston Bears Coach Matt Hopkins believed it was time to rest and recover with region play beginning last week. The Houston Bears competed in the PG Gulf Coast Showdown, where Drew Burress won tournament MVP. Burress has since broken Houston County’s school home run record. Prior to “Seed Day at the Garden,” the HOCO school record for home runs was 10. Burress claimed his eleventh and twelfth home runs of the year on April 1 against the Valdosta Wildcats.

Coach Hopkins released the following statement: “Two Big region wins tonight. The Bears completed their double-header sweep against Valdosta, 9-2 and 10-9. Congrats to Drew Burress on breaking the single season home run record, with his 11th and 12th of the season. Gage Harrelson with the 6-6 game two and walk off winner.”

The Houston County Bears have won sixteen, thus far. Scoring 178 runs and allowing fewer than 82, the Houston County Bears are looking very fierce as they anticipate their region 1-6A stretch of games.

Perfect Game Scouting Coordinator Tyler Russo had the following to say about Houston’s Drew Burress: “Over last weekend, Burress was awarded MVP of the tournament and raised many eyebrows in Florida. Great things are expected in Burress’ future.”

One day, Drew Burress and his teammate Gage Harrelson will be featured on Houston County’s Baseball Wall of Fame. Texas Tech Signee Gage Harrleson reached another milestone over last weekend. Harrleson recorded his 100th and 101st hit as a Houston Bear. The four-year Bear recorded this milestone, while HOCO was competing in the PG Gulf Coast Showdown in Florida.

The Bears host the Jones County Greyhounds today. The Hounds are 16-5 overall and will travel to “War-Town” to face the Bears in a non-region contest. The Houston Bears will look to continue their three-game winning streak. Matt Hopkins’ Bears have won every home game this season. Houston is also 1-2 on the road and 4-2 at neutral sites. The 16-4 Bears are currently undefeated in their region, at 3-0, which is good enough for first place.
