Blocking at the Net: Spotlighting three seniors – Katelyn Harris
There are many leaders this year in Houston County and three elite leaders from Warner Robins, Northside, and Veterans High Schools have proven to fill the shoes on and off the court. All three show tenacity, grit, and most important, sportsmanship.
All of these student athletes have larger aspirations after high school and of course, all seniors deserve congratulations. Best of luck to all seniors, whether or not GHSA playoffs are in sight this school year. All of the senior experiences will provide the guidance needed to be successful in life.
Warner Robins High School: Katelyn Harris
Katelyn Harris has provided Warner Robins High with exciting matches as a defensive specialist and the last two seasons as the team’s libero. As libero, she would need to push herself and with the help of all of her coaches and assistance from Chris Walkins and Totem Gym, they have mentored her to have a disciplined work ethic and to strive to be the best she can be, leading her to believe in herself when she was her biggest critic.
Harris attacks every dig and effort to pass the ball for her team to score points throughout matches. She would cover from line to line in the back row to save balls that may not look like there would even be a possibility and then make a pass to the setters to set up both the outside hitters.
After the high school season, the things she said she will miss the most are all of her teammates who have bonded together as a sisterhood and especially other seniors which she has played with all four years. Her fondest memory was staying overnight and bonding with teammates in a hotel after out of town matchups.
Harris has academic plans to major in Biomedical Engineering with aspirations to become a biomaterials developer and/or tissue engineer. Although she is not planning on playing volleyball after high school, she would like to have an opportunity to play at UGA or Mercer University, since they are both close to home and both are respectable in this field.
Harris also credits her four years in volleyball to teaching her that everything you do will help others, not just on the court, but in life. Her fondest memory is when the team took a best of 5 match from Lee County (Region 6A) last year.
