Better Late Than Never: Former Demon Ben Johnson commits to Truett-McConnell Bears
Warner Robins High School senior right-hander Ben
Johnson, by his own account, took his time making up his mind about where to
study and continue his playing career. The decision, however long it may have
been, is now done, Johnson will be headed to Truett-McConnell University in
Cleveland, Ga.
“The first thing I noticed about Truett was the
generosity of coach Croley,” says Johnson of his initial visit with the Bears
staff. “He was a very nice and religious guy. He was also straightforward and
very upfront which is important to me.”
The Bears, a NAIA program, were 24-25 last season
under head coach Mike Croley. A young team, the Bears will just lose four seniors,
only one being a pitcher, left-hander Hayden Carey. Johnson, who also played
the infield in high school, will be playing in the outfield in college.
“Playing at the next level has been a big dream of mine and a goal that I have
been working for all my life so to say that I am ready would be an
understatement,” says Johnson of his move to college. “I am more ready to leave
home and play at the next level. This is the start of a new chapter in my
life.”
The coaching staff at Truett-McConnell, according
to the head coach is happy to have him start that chapter. “We are excited to
add Ben to our program,” said Bears head coach Mike Croley. “We have a nice
incoming freshman class that he should fit into nicely.
Johnson, who played first and third base along with
pitching for the Demons will play in the outfield for Croley and the Bears.
Truett-McConnell plays in the Appalachian Athletic Conference and hosts
an annual unsigned 2018 and 2019 rising senior player showcase, the Bears
Baseball High School Showcase, on July 12.
