Bears soccer shuts out Columbus

The undefeated Houston County High boys soccer team traveled to Columbus High Wednesday to try to keep the streak alive.
“The game started slowly for the Bears, who held the majority of possession, but couldn’t seem to break through the sagging Columbus defense, who were able to rally out of their own box for a few dangerous counter-attacks of their own,” said head coach Jason Kirk. “Those Columbus opportunities were turned away by the excellent defensive play of senior center back Dylan Krimmer and freshman keeper Adam Myers.”
Just as it appeared the half would end nil-nil, Houston County finally broke free behind the defense as senior Everick Little played a through ball to streaking Steven Moore, who finished it cleanly in the 40th minute of the half to give the Bears a 1-0 lead at the break.
“The Bears came out of halftime with a few new wrinkles designed to attack the packed-in Columbus defense and immediately began swarming the home team’s goal,” said Kirk. “Shots flew off the boots of the Bears and peppered the scoring area; the Columbus GK worked hard to keep his team close.”
A cross from senior outside back Drew Behrman found the head of senior striker Andrew Weber, found the back of the net for a 2-0 lead.
“Columbus rallied after the goal and had a couple of excellent chances that were swallowed up by junior Brice Dawson, who helped combine for the shutout,” said Kirk.
Late in the half, junior striker Josh Bilbrey connected on a touch pass to Moore in the box. Moore put it away to notch the final score of the night and account for the 3-0 final. The goal was Steven’s team leading 12th in just eight games.
“We knew this was going to be a very tough game for us. Columbus is always well-coached and competes at a very high level, said Kirk.
