Bears and Lady Bears are off to hot starts to the season
It’s one thing to begin a season 4-0, it is an entirely different thing to have done so while outscoring your opponents 25-0 like the Houston County Lady Bears have. The boys team hasn’t been a slouch either, beginning their season at 4-0 as well. Both teams have already captured tournament trophies and look to take further advantage of that momentum going forward.
Both teams came away with the Sellers Cup championship after sweeping Griffin and Spalding clubs during their respective tournaments.
The Lady Bears have yet to allow an opposing goal this season, most recently defeating Upson-Lee on the road Wednesday 10-0. So will the Bears, who won their last game, at Upson-Lee Wednesday night, by the same score. Both teams will be back on the pitch at home Wednesday, Feb. 19 to face Dodge County (girls game scheduled for a 5 p.m. start).
The impressive amounts of goals scored by the Lady Bears have been scored from up and down the roster, making it difficult for teams to pinpoint a player or two to mark. Mady Hughes leads the team with eight goals (it’s the most individual goals scored thus far by a player on either team) followed by seven goals from Shelby Berryhill and Emily Grady. Cammie Jernigan has also scored a trio of goals. 10 players have scored for the Lady Bears this season, a level of versatility that will go a long way to helping them get back to the 6A Elite 8 and beyond thus season. Whitley Anderson leads the team with six assists while goalie Addy Galason has had to earn just one save thus far due to the solid play of the Lady Bears midfield and back line.
The Bears are led in scoring by CJ Mungai with seven goals and Gabe Santiago’s three goals. Eight Bears have scored at least one goal through four games this season with three having scored at least twice. Tyler Berham (one goal) leads the team with four assists and senior goalkeeper Max Rigby, an All-region quarterback selection and Houston Home Journal All-County first team selection, has two saves thus far.
