Barbara was a true mother and grandmother to all. So many knew and loved Maemae and called her their own.
Over the years Barbara was a caregiver to aging aunts and a cousin. She shared
love and light and a little sass wherever she went. A graduate of Wesleyan College Barbara
earned an AB in Psychology and over the years worked as a Behavior Specialist and as
Director of the Salvation Army Spouse Abuse Shelter. Barbara volunteered over the years
with Byron Elementary PTO, the Friends of the Library in Byron, the American Heart
Association, and with Crisis Line of Middle Georgia. As a Rolling Reader at Byron
Elementary School for several years. Maemae touched many lives bringing stories to life
with her magical voice and animated expressions. She loved learning and children’s
books and enjoyed sharing interesting experiments with the children as well. She was
known to give away copies of her favorite books like “Our Animal Friends at Maple Hill
Farm” to all children she loved and many she had just met.
Barbara and her late husband, Bill, whom she had been married to for 44years
sought to make a difference in the world in their own quiet way. They worked together to
raise their children to know they were loved and that they could do anything they
put their minds to. Barbara taught her children good stewardship and expected them
to be good caretakers of the world and most importantly. of others. Barbara and her
husband supported many mission programs over the years including Refuge Ranch
grandchildren, even when she was at her sickest. She enjoyed afternoon naps when she could get them, crossword puzzles, Netflix, and walking around the paths at Blackberry Flats. And
though he frustrated her often, she loved her cat Rev who is also a survivor.
Maemae blessed many along her journey and had a knack for encouraging people to share
their stories without a word. She loved with a fierce love that was precious and dear.
Maemae was blessed to have wonderful neighbors, a loving church family at Trinity UMC,
and to be a part of a wonderful community. She will be missed and this world shall never be
same, as she left it a better place than it was before her.
