Avoid a fire under the Christmas tree with these fire safety tips

HOUSTON COUNTY, Ga. – Christmas is less than a week away and all the shopping can keep us from remembering to stay safe.

Many small things in homes can eventually lead to a fire. Perry Fire Prevention Chief Ephraim Wheeler said people can stay safe during the holiday season in many ways.

Wheeler shares the three most essential tips to prevent fire hazards in homes.

“One of the first things is don’t forget to turn off all holiday lights when going to bed or leaving the house. Another good one is to keep children, pets and decorations away from candles. If you get a live tree, make sure it’s fresh and water it to keep it fresh. Bend the needles up and down to make sure no needles fall off,” said Wheeler.

He also said that these are the most essential tips people should follow because they can lead to fire hazards.

According to the Perry Fire and Emergency Services Facebook page, there are other tips to remember. These tips include checking labels on older decorations because certain tinsels may contain lead; when putting decorations outside, ensure decorations are for outside use and securely attach them to homes or trees. Finally, check for the fire-resistant label on an artificial Christmas tree.

Wheeler said there are many videos and other safety tips on their Facebook page to continue reminding the public.

The last thing anyone wants under their Christmas tree is a fire. This Christmas, following these steps, is crucial to safety.
