Akins is the voice of HOCO: Get to know your Sports Editor

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Since the early fall I have served as the Sports Editor for The Houston Home Journal. This position has gifted me with a third opportunity in my career, which I will always cherish. Today, the world of sports are influenced by the names of Shannon Sharpe and Stephen A. Smith, both of which are proud graduates of prestigious HBCU’s. Before accepting the position at HHJ, I was a spring 2021 graduate of a Historically Black College & University (HBCU). The illustrious Fort Valley State University polished my drive of compassion and confidence that I already possessed. At any given moment, in any environment, I have the ability to adapt, but still be the “loudest in the room”. I will continue to treat Houston County, Georgia no different. ; I will serve Perry, Warner Robins, Centerville and HOCO to the best of my abilities. I am your source for Central Georgia Sports. Now, Houston County is a part of my journey and I am proud to have another experience that I can learn from. I would like to thank all of the coaches I have interviewed and those I will interview in the near future. Also, I would like to thank my readers who have sent me notes. Speaking on the negative comments, I have the memory of bad quarterback. I do not dwell on the bad notes at all, but I simply look at them as constructive criticism. Thank you to the readers who send positive feedback. Most notably, thank you to all of the student-athletes that I have met, so far. Thank you for trusting me to tell your stories. I have become a true fan of my coverage athletes and I will continue to follow your individual journeys.

I chose to not wrap this up with a common cliché. So, I’ll say this: We all have a story to tell and somewhere while telling our stories, we must remember to inspire while we are still aspiring. Each of our journeys is a marathon, not a race. Do not allow social media, the media or the world we live in, dictate how you feel about your accomplishments in life. An old coach of mine would always say, “You are human, it is okay to get tired. It is not okay to quit.” Never cut your journey short, because you’re tired at the moment. Eventually, you will take an exit that will change your route and bring you to a crossroad with a new adventure in life. As I continue to serve as the Sports Editor of The Houston Home Journal, I will continuously look at this as only a step along the journey for Ashton A. Akins. Thank you HOCO!
