Akins cans 38 as Bears top VHS

On Friday, the Houston

County High boys basketball team won 75-70 at home against county rival

Veterans High. Davon Akins had 38 points and Andrew Graham had 16 to pace the

Bears of head coach Stephen Walls.

 
 

“We were leading by 16

at one point in the third quarter, but Veterans is a really good team and

fought it all the way back to three points in the fourth,” said Walls.

“(Center) Malik Broughton was relentless on the offensive glass.

 
 

“We have to keep

bigger teams off of the offensive boards if we want to win consistently, but I

am very proud of our effort and ability to finish the game out.”

 
 

Broughton scored 17 points

while teammate Jonathan Robertson added 12 and Mike Leger 10.

 
 

In the girls game the Lady

Warhawks defeated Houston County 53-40. Leading the way was Aspen Coggins with

16 points and Jalyn Slaughter with 12 points and 11 rebounds Kerregan Poe

Cochran added 10 points and four assists and LaKinya Green went 6-for-6 from

the foul line.

 
 

On Saturday, Northside’s boys won at Perry High 68-47.

Christian Kennedy had nine points, 17 rebounds, eight blocks, four assists and

three steals.
