A perfect day at the horseshoe pitch

Forty-six horseshoe pitchers were on hand for the Georgia Horseshoe Pitcher’s Association state doubles held May 22 in Hull, and there was a bit of history made.

Larry Myers of Perry pitched a perfect game during the competition going 20-for-20 in ringers made out of horseshoes pitched.

Myers was in Class B, where he and his partner James Griffin placed second overall with a 4-2 record. It was good enough to make the Championship round, and they placed third overall at 4-3.

In Class A, there was a playoff involving Aubrey Walker of Perry and Brian Bell. They faced off with Jimmy and Taylor Colie in the final pairing, and each team ended with 3.5 wins and 1.5 losses during regular play. So they turned around and played one more time with the Colies winning.

In that B Class, Myers and Griffin also went into a playoff with Jerry Morris and Tony Mayberry, and it was the latter pair prevailing to finish 5-1.

Marty Wabich and Sue Mayberry defeated Cordele’s Marcus Waters and Perry’s Mark Walton to win Class C by one game.

Morris and Mayberry – like all winning pairs from Hull – took the Championship with a 6-1 record. They ran into Waters and Walton, who got the win plus one other match victory to stay in the hunt for that championship, but had to settle for fourth.
