A brief, but severe thunderstorm swept through middle Georgia Monday afternoon and left behind a trail of disaster including power outages, property damage and a deceased person that was fatally injured as a result of a fallen tree. During the storm, wind gusts intensified up to 60 miles per hour in some areas, including Houston County, where the storm turned deadly for one Bonaire resident.

According to a media release from Houston County Emergency Management Agency, 55-year-old Carla Hicks was killed when a large pine tree fell into the living room of the home she was in. The toppled tree caused major damage to the roof and outer walls of the house. Houston County Fire Department, Houston County Sheriff’s Office and Houston Healthcare EMS were alerted of the natural disaster and responded around 4:35 Monday afternoon. To their dismay, as the crew worked the scene at 204 Fox Hall Boulevard in Bonaire, they discovered Harris’ body in the ruins. Based on the information shared, Harris was struck by the fallen tree and the injuries she sustained in the impact proved fatal.

The Red Cross is assisting Harris’ family during their time of great loss and disaster in hopes of making this heartbreaking tragic time more bearable.
