Veterans got their first dominating win of the season on Friday in a 65-26 final over Worth County.

The entire team played well, with head coach Tracy Fendley noting that all but two players scored the ball.

But it went beyond just scoring; The Lady ‘Hawks executed their press well, took care of the ball and out rebounded the Lady Rams in one of their best efforts of the season.

Kiersten Rogers and Simone Sadler sliding into the starting lineup had something to do with that, but Camila Vicioso also played a great game.

Rogers and Sadler are both coming off of injuries, with Rogers returning just week ago and Sadler not playing basketball at all last year.

Those two sticking in the starting lineup isn’t guaranteed. Fendley is going off of what she sees at practice.

“I’m still experimenting. It’s just really what I’m seeing at practice,” She said on the starters. “Simone’s really coming into her own…Simone had knee surgery last year…she didn’t play basketball last year either. So both [Sadler and Rogers] are really just coming back and getting back into the swing of it. And you can just tell with both of them the light bulb’s going on.”

It seems to be getting going for Vicioso, too, who finished with a team-high 13 points and played a tremendous game.

Vicioso is a bit of a tweener, meaning she doesn’t fit exactly into the mold of a forward or a guard.

“She’s very versatile,” Fendley said. “I can play her at the point of our half court, I can play her at the point of our press. I can put her at guard, I can put her in the post. She moves well, she rebounds well, she’s long, she gets in passing lanes. She also sees the floor well [and] makes good passes. And she’s got a really good jump shot.”

Her vision around the basket may be her most valuable trait. It’s not something you see often in high school. She can pull down the rebound and make the right dash back out or to another big in the post, or she can lead the fast break and take advantage of an unset defense.

She’s also as good as automatic on short range jumpers, which helps when teams pack the paint.

Fendley believes their second half of the season will be much better than the first, and if things keep progressing the way they are that could come to fruition for the Lady ‘Hawks.
