Westfield softball, football bring home championships over the weekend

The Westfield faithful were treated to not just one, but two championships over the weekend as their softball and football programs won one a piece.

The Lady Hornets inched closer to a decade of dominance in the GIAA 3A classification, winning their ninth straight state championship with a 6-1 final over John Milledge Academy.

Camilla Bloodworth finished a phenomenal weekend in the circle with 13 strikeouts in the championship game, bringing her total to 35 in the tournament.

The defense performed well behind her, too, allowing three runs only one of which was earned.

On their way to another chip Westfield beat Piedmont Academy 10-2, John Milledge Academy (the first time) 10-0 and Terrell Academy 3-0.

Football also picked up some more hardware, winning their first back-to-back region championship since 2013-2014, the start of their three-peat.

That result came from their 17-7 win over Brookstone, giving them the head-to-head tiebreaker over the Cougars and Strong Rock Christian even if they were to lose to two-loss St. Anne-Pacelli this week.

The Hornets hit a lull after the departure of head coach Ronnie Jones in 2016, but with Chad Campbell at the helm Westfield is back on track to be a perennial contender in GIAA 3A.
