PERRY—On the morning of Dec. 30, 2024, Sheriff-elect Matt Moulton was sworn in to become the next Houston County Sheriff.

“This is a special and historic occasion for this county, and time marches on as we move with it,” Chief Judge Edward D. Lukemire said.

Lukemire also thanked interim-Sheriff Billy Rape for his service and his long loyalty and commitment to not only Sheriff Talton but also the whole law enforcement community.

“We owe him a debt of gratitude that people in Houston County cannot repay,” Lukemire said, “Words are inadequate at times, and we just want to say thank you.”

After Moulton was sworn in, he had the chance to share a few words about the moment.

“Thank you for being here this morning to celebrate this with me,” Moulton said. “When Sheriff Talton was sworn in I wasn’t even alive, and I wouldn’t be here without him and his leadership.”

Moulton said he knew he wanted to become involved in law enforcement since he was a kid as his grandfather had a police scanner.

“I learned what the 10 codes were and knew at an early age that this is what I wanted to do, and here we are,” he said. ‘I’m happy and humble to be here.”

Moulton then thanked his daughter for standing beside him all this time.

“For the last 15, almost 16 years, you’ve been right beside me every step of the way. She understands the sacrifice that is made by peace officers because she’s gone through birthdays, Christmas, and special occasions without me because I was busy working,” he said.

Moulton added one thing he strived for on his campaign trail was to continue Sheriff Talton’s vision forward in the Houston County Sheriff’s Office. Moulton began doing just that as he wore Talton’s vest while swearing-in.

“I wouldn’t be who I am today without the leadership of Sheriff Talton,” he said.
