HOUSTON COUNTY – SunMark Community Bank is celebrating 75 years of serving the community throughout August.

The bank’s story started in Hawkinsville after businessman and farmer R.D. Buchan was unhappy with the only bank in town at the time. Due to that unhappiness, he saw the opportunity to serve both businesses and farmers.

In 1949, Buchan started The Pulaski Banking Company. The bank was a success during the 1960s when the area’s first drive thru window was installed. Bank teller Jeannette Ford ran the window which then led to her becoming the bank’s president. Ford was the second female in the state to hold the title.

In 1977, the bank was upgraded to a more modern headquarters and two decades later, was renamed SunMark Community Bank. Later in 1995, they expanded to Warner Robins and has continued to expand its mortgage department.

The bank now has branches in Bonaire, Fort Valley, Perry and Byron.

Marketing Director Breane Knowles said the bank is thrilled to celebrate this milestone. Every Friday they will be going to a different branch, holding giveaways for the first five customers.

Knowles said the customers will draw out of a bucket and will receive a gift card, a t-shirt or something fun from the bank.

This upcoming Thursday, Aug. 8 all the employees will come together for a party at the Perry branch.

“That’s kind of the way we are celebrating, by giving back to our employees and then the other Fridays is how we are giving back to our customers,” she said.

Brad Collins, President and CEO of SunMark Community Bank, also expressed his thanks to the community and employees for helping them throughout their 75 years in business.

“Reaching our 75th anniversary is a remarkable milestone, made possible by the support of our communities,” he said. “To our loyal customers and dedicated team, thank you for your commitment and trust. We look forward to a future filled with continued growth and shared success.”
