PERRY, Ga. – A recent rumor about a potential planned shooting at Perry High School has sparked concerns within the community.

In a Facebook post, one mother stated that she and her child’s father had been informed on Monday Sept. 18, by the school, that their child’s name was on a “list” and that this is how the rumors surfaced. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office quickly launched an investigation after the rumor. Authorities have confirmed that one individual has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident.

The rumors quickly circulated, leading to widespread fear and anxiety among parents, students and staff.

On Sept. 21, the Perry Police Department took to Facebook to address concerns surrounding the unnecessary panic about the rumored threat.

”As always, we are working with the Sheriff’s Office to ensure that all schools and students are safe,” the post said.

Following a thorough investigation, the department clarified that there was no direct connection to any violent actions at the school. The police department also wrote “To all those wondering why the Perry Police Department hasn’t put more information out on this incident. The School Resource Officer at Perry High School is a Houston County Sheriff’s Deputy. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office is the investigating agency on this incident and not the Perry Police Department.”

However, despite the department’s assurance, many parents and students expressed their concerns on the social media platform, reflecting heightened anxiety and a desire to safeguard their children from potential harm.

One parent commented, “Rumor or not, I’m not chancing my children’s lives.”

The incident served as a significant reminder of the challenge law enforcement agencies can face in the digital age, where rumors can spread rapidly, especially through social media platforms, and highlighted open and honest communication between law enforcement and the community.

As the community coped with the aftermath of the unsettling rumor, the Houston County Sheriff’s Office remains committed to maintaining a safe and secure environment for all students in the area.
