Westfield Hornets lose to Southland Academy Raiders in low-scoring affair

PERRY, Ga. – The Westfield Hornets (1-2) lost their second game in a row last Friday night in a defensive game against the Southland Academy Raiders (2-1).

The final score was 14-7 in the Raiders’ favor, which is an improvement for Westfield, at least defensively.

In their previous game against Stratford Academy they allowed 35 points, so the outcome for the defense is a vast improvement.

Unfortunately the story isn’t quite the same for the offense, as they only scored one touchdown for the entire game that came in the second quarter.

The Raiders got the scoring started on their third drive of the first quarter, which was aided by a Westfield personal foul that put them on the 23-yard line.

Senior quarterback Banks Simmons found Mac McMichael for one of their two scores on the night.

Both teams fumbled in the second quarter, but Westfield recovered the Raiders’ second one on the Raiders’ 29-yard line.

Junior transfer quarterback Brayden Gay got the ball to freshman Stone St. Clair to run it across the goal line and tie the game 7-7.

The third quarter was scoreless for both teams, but the Raiders did come close.

At the beginning of the third quarter Westfield failed a 4th-and-three attempt near midfield, and the Raiders took that to the Westfield 15-yard line.

Though after three downs and no progress, they attempted a field goal that Westfield’s freshman Win Hoots blocked.

The Raiders scored what would be the game-winning touchdown on a pass from Simmons to Jackson Avant with about two minutes to go in the game. Westfield’s offense couldn’t respond.

Head coach Chad Campbell didn’t mince words in the post-game interview.

“Everything, everything, everything,” Campbell said on what the team can improve on. “[We had] too many negative plays or no gain on the offense. They will come back and work hard every day. We’ve gotta get better.”

Westfield will travel Friday, Sept. 8 to Tiftarea Academy for a kickoff scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
