The Macon Telegraph just published the results of their 2023 Best of the Best voting. I’m happy to announce that Visiting Angels® of Middle Georgia won the Home Care category again; actually we have a pretty good track record having won it in 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022 and now again for 2023! I promise it is more than tradition, it is the result of a tremendous amount of hard work year after year. None of the staff ever takes this honor for granted.

I’m prejudiced of course because my sons and their wives are all involved in the business but even standing back and taking an objective look, they’ve earned it and deserve the recognition.

All this recognition made me look back and reflect on how and when we started the business. Back in 2008 my son, David, was interested in making a career change from defense contracting into health care. As we did our research, the Visiting Angels® organization stood out. I remember vividly going to a presentation meeting in Atlanta and then for a week’s worth of training in Philadelphia at the end of which we went to the home opener for the Philadelphia Phillies; it was cold!

To get started, my son, William, and I had to work through the entire summer of 2008 to get all of our licensing paperwork together to present to the Georgia State regulators before we could take on our first client who was “waiting in the wings” for a couple weeks until all that paperwork was processed. Finally we were able to introduce to her our first caregiver and that was the beginning. Fond memories!

It also got me thinking about this All About Seniors column I’ve been doing for fifteen years now, first for the Houston Home Journal and now for the Cordele Dispatch as well. I remember having the idea for a seniors-oriented column and then presenting it to the then editor of the HHJ (the was several editors ago!). At the time we met in his office, his dad was in need of home care and he understood exactly what it was all about so he readily opened some column space for me and that was the start. I hope you’ve enjoyed reading the columns as much as I have writing them. I usually pause to ask for God’s guidance to make the column truthful, informative, educational and entertaining. I know I don’t always hit on all those goals but I try.

I have a “Memorabilia file” where I’ve kept clippings of the most of the column; perhaps one day I’ll try to paste them together into some kind of meaningful format. Any volunteers?

So, after a lot of hard work, you have voted Visiting Angels ® Best of the Best one more time and we’re very grateful. We’ll try to earn your trust all over again as we continue to provide home care for Middle Georgia’s Seniors. Thank you!

Thanks for reading All About Seniors…..see you next week!

Bill Milby is a graduate Automotive Engineer from LeTourneau University and The Chrysler Institute and a certified Bulldog with an MBA from UGA. After 34 years in the automotive, RV and bus industries, Bill, together with his two sons, started Visiting Angels of Middle Georgia in 2008. His sons and their wives run the business of caring for Middle Georgia Seniors in their own homes on a day-to-day basis. They are a very active and supporting family of Middle Georgia.

Shortly after starting that business, Bill approached the Editor of The Houston Home Journal with the idea of a regular column called All About Seniors to highlight issues that would be educational, entertaining and helpful to seniors in the particular life issues that affect them as a cohort in our community. The editor, who was at the time caring for a senior relative himself, immediately recognized the value of such a column and Bill has been a weekly contributor ever since.

Bill is married to the bride of his youth, Mary Beth Milby, and they recently celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary. Together they have five children and nine grandchildren.

Bill says he really appreciates his loyal AAS readers, especially when they send him feedback or ask questions about his columns. Thanks for reading All About Seniors!
