Cooper named Charlie & Rubye Newberry 2023 Scholarship recipient
The 2023 Newberry Scholarship recipient is Nyjaya Cooper. Nyjaya Cooper graduated from Perry High School where she completed Honors courses. She also took Dual Enrollment courses at the Houston County Career Academy. She plans to attend Kennesaw State University. Nyjaya is the daughter of Delushundra Thomas and Jason Cooper Sr.
While attending Perry High School, Nyjaya volunteered at Summer Hill Nursing Home where she obtained her Certified Nursing Assistant certification. She also donated clothing and food items to her local church, student council and nonprofit organizations such as Goodwill and Salvation Army. In her scholarship essay, Nyjaya said these touching words; “Kindness is an act of love and everyone in our society deserves some.”
Angela Robitzsch, LPN an instructor for the Nurse’s Aide Program at Central Georgia Technical College and Nyjaya’s Instructor at Houston County Career Academy, spoke very highly of Nyjaya in her Letter of Recommendation.
In the letter, she says: “During the time I have known Nyjaya, I have experienced an individual who is very punctual, hardworking, and carries themselves in a polite, respectable manner. Nyjaya was very devoted to her studies in my program. She took pride in learning hands-on skills and worked hard on her assignments.”
The Newberry Scholarship Committee would like to recognize Nyjaya’s hard work and dedication. We truly believe that she will achieve great things and continue to uplift the African American community, therefore, we are awarding Nyjaya $500 to use towards her college expenses.
The Charlie & Rubye Newberry Scholarship is a nonrenewable scholarship offered annually to provide financial assistance to both a deserving African American Female and African American Male from Perry High School. Our goal is to encourage our scholarship recipients to extend their education beyond high school.
We believe that hard work, dedication and helping others are the keys to success. We are committed to honoring the legacy of Charlie & Rubye Newberry and elevating the African American Community by supporting deserving students with a scholarship to attend the college or university of their dreams.
