Texas edges Mercer
AUSTIN, Texas. – The Mercer baseball program (9-5) dropped a road game to Texas (6-7), 11-3, on Wednesday at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.
The Longhorns took an early lead, but the Bears held Texas scoreless for three-straight innings beginning in the fifth. Trevor Austin and Antonio Brown combined for a double play to close the fifth and ignite some energy in the Mercer dugout.
In the sixth, a double off the left field wall by Jozsef Rohrbacher placed him in scoring position. He advanced to third on a single by Bradley Frye before crossing home plate on a sacrifice fly by Eric Toth.
The Bears caught Peyton Powell stealing in the sixth to record another scoreless inning on defense.
Ben Olson launched a double off the left field wall in the seventh, allowing pinch runner Landon Underhill to setup for a score. Underhill advanced to third on a ground out by Reid Brown, and a single by Carter Geier brought home the second run of the day for the Bears.
Texas found itself in a dangerous pitching situation in the ninth as the bases were loaded after two batters were hit and another walked. Underhill ran in his second run of the day on a passed ball.
