Living the dream: Woods and Willis excel in Athens

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

ATHENS, Ga. — Over recent years, Houston County baseball fans have raved about the success of their favorite local bullpen. The Houston County community has produced numerous collegiate baseball players as well, with several of those players going on to play within the Major Leagues.

For many athletes, playing professionally is among their biggest dreams. For others, the dreams become endless. When does an athlete know to hang it up? How long does it take for young athletes to decide that they no longer live their “biggest dream?”

What causes athletes to pivot and create new fulfillments? In this series of the “Living the dream” edition, you will read about familiar names. Why? A couple of Houston County natives are currently “living the dream.”

In the last edition, I broke down the story of Treyson Hughes and Tanner Hall from Mercer University in Macon. This week’s “living the dream” edition will showcase Jaden Woods and Coleman Willis.

Woods and Willis are polished athletes at the University of Georgia. Though they are both collegiate baseball players, the dream is still alive.

Jaden Woods is a rising junior, and Coleman Willis is a rising sophomore athlete, both of which are active on the baseball diamond in Athens. Throughout Woods’ career as a Bulldog, he has been sensational.

The Warner Robins native matched his career high, with seven K’s in four scoreless innings against the Alabama Crimson Tide at the SEC Tournament. He also earned an invitation to the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team summer training camp.

Jaden is an alumnus of Houston County High School, where he played under Coach Matt Hopkins. Woods helped the HOCO Bears to the GHSA 6A Elite-Eight of the state tournament and won the region 1-6A title in 2019 with a 24-12 record. Currently, he is a sports management major at the University of Georgia.

In Athens, Woods made 25 appearances for the Bulldogs as a sophomore and tallied a 1-1 record. In 2022, Woods recorded a 4.80 ERA and three saves. Standing at 6’2”, 180 pounds, Woods led the team with 80 strikeouts in 54.1 innings pitched and held his opponents to a .227 batting average.

Woods helped Georgia go 36-23 and advance to the NCAA Chapel Hill (N.C.) Regional. He also earned Freshman All-SEC honors in 2021. After going 4-1 with a 4.58 ERA, Woods recorded one save in 17 appearances and four starts. He will begin his summer playing in the Cape Cod League for the Harwich Mariners.

Coleman Willis is a 6’7”, 210-pound pitcher for the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens. Willis is also an alumnus of Houston County High School where he played under Coach Matt Hopkins.

Willis was named a 2021 high school third team All-American by Baseball America. Adding this to his list of accolades, Willis was a Georgia Dugout Preview Magazine Player of the Year, and an All-State team selection. During his senior year at HOCO, Willis posted a 9-2 record and a state title win for the Bears. Coleman studies exercise and sports science at the University of Georgia.

While at UGA, Willis has posted a 1-0 mark during his freshman season. He had a 9.35 ERA in 14 appearances and five starts.

Willis made his debut with one scoreless inning and two strikeouts against Akron (Ohio) and pitched a scoreless inning against Hofstra at the NCAA Regional Tournament in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. According to Christopher Lakos, UGA’s assistant athletic director, “Jaden has had great starts to previous seasons, and we hope Coleman does the same.”

Expect greater outings from these talented athletes. Jaden Woods and Coleman Willis have bright futures ahead of them.
