It’s the Beginning of the End
America has suffered a 27-month onslaught of an epidemic called COVID-19. It started on Dec. 12, 2019, in Wuhan, China, and spread throughout the world. Total deaths worldwide are nearing 6 million people. In the United States, 940,000 have died with no end in sight.
On May 25, 2020, George Floyd — a 46-year-old Black man — was murdered in Minneapolis, Minnesota, by Derek Chauvin, a 44-year-old white police officer. Floyd was arrested on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 bill. Chauvin handcuffed Floyd behind his back, then placed Floyd face down on the ground. Chauvin left his knee on Floyd’s neck for 10 excruciating minutes, cutting off blood supply to his brain. Floyd died and Chauvin was sentenced to prison. This wanton killing set off a series of marches, lootings and burnings that have plagued major cities to this day. Its outgrowth prompted a move to defund the police while crime is rising. District Attorneys are releasing criminals without prosecuting them. With law enforcement under attack, crime runs rampant leaving law abiding citizens in grave danger.
Gridlock exists between Democrats and Republicans in the U.S. House and Senate. Our national debt has risen from $900 ‘billion’ dollars in 1980 to a whooping $30 ‘trillion’ dollars today. Common sense dictates that we shouldn’t spend more than we make. Yet, our federal government continues to borrow money year after year. Interest payments on the national debt may eventually bankrupt America. Inflation has risen to a whopping 7.5 percent. The cost of new homes to cars to groceries to gasoline is rapidly increasing. While our country teeters on the brink of economic disaster, the Federal Reserve is considering raising interest rates 4 to 5 times.
After construction of the southern border wall was stopped, the U.S. border is overrun daily by immigrants, primarily from Mexico and Central America. Some are criminals, others smuggle drugs and a sizeable number carry deadly viruses. Border states like Texas and Arizona are fighting back, using their own resources. This is a threat to national security.
Our world is in turmoil. Russia threatens to invade Ukraine and China seeks to annex Taiwan. North Korea and Iran are nearing development of a nuclear bomb. Both countries are testing intercontinental missiles to deliver nuclear warheads.
The Roman Empire stood for 400 years whereas the United States has existed for only 246 years. Unless the American people turn to God, our republic could be heading for extinction. At King Belshazzar’s palace in Babylon, a mysterious hand wrote on the wall: “You have been weighed in the balance and found wanting” (Daniel 5). This same message may apply to the United States.
Jesus cited the events to usher in the dreaded ‘tribulation period,’ which leads to the end of the world. In Matthew 24:7, Jesus said that “nation will rise against nation and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines, pestilences, and earthquakes.” Our world is falling apart. Just turn on your television or read the newspapers.
II Chronicles 7: 14 provides the only answer: “If my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven, and I will forgive their sin and will heal their land.”
