Steve Williams announces his run for County Commissioner Post 2
WARNER ROBINS, Ga. — Steve Williams stood before an amassed crowd of county leaders, prominent citizens and members of the media, and announced his run for County Commissioner Post Two during a press conference Wednesday. This announcement comes only days after Commissioner Jay Walker, III, the current commissioner for post two, announced that he would not be running for reelection.
“Service is not something I do, it’s who I am; it’s my way of life,” Steve Williams said. “That’s my commitment to Houston County — to make a difference, to give back, and to partner with the other commissioners, but also other municipalities, our public safety. This is all part of what makes us great.”
Williams was introduced by Houston County Development Authority Chairman Ben Hulbert, who called Williams a tireless worker and faith-driven, amongst other positive attributes.
“[Williams] has a strong heart for the community, and in particular and strong love for Houston County,” Hulbert said. “Steve’s been a positive influence in my life; he’s a great human being, and he would make an excellent, excellent commissioner for Houston County.”
Following Hulbert’s comments, Williams spoke to his audience.
“There’s no doubt there’s some things we need to work on, but I’m a tireless worker, folks,” Williams said. ”I’m willing to commit to you.
“There’s no doubt it’s going to take work, there’s no doubt it’s going to take a commitment, and there’s no doubt it’s going to take faith in God.”
Williams thanked both his family and several of Houston County’s leaders, including his potential predecessor — Jay Walker, III — for backing him and his efforts.
Williams is an active Houston County citizen, working on the Planning and Zoning Board, in addition to his service as a previous chairman of the Robins Regional Chamber of Commerce Board, chairman of the Senior Advisory Board, chairman of the Workforce Investment Board, a member of the 21st Century Partnership Board, the Museum of Aviation Board and the Mount de Sales Academy Board.
Williams has also been working in the banking industry in Houston County for 35 years. According to Hulbert, Williams has been involved in 68 organizations, and is active in many today.
According to a press release provided by his team, Williams’ work in the commission will focus on four main pillars: “growth and infrastructure; support of Public Safety; fiscal responsibility; and community collaboration, cooperation, and partnership.”
Finally, Chairman Tommy Stalnaker provided some closing remarks.
“This is a great day for Houston County, this is a great day for Steve Williams, I’m not sure it’s a great day for Steve Williams’ wife though,” Stalnaker said, drawing a laugh from the crowd.
Stalnaker addressed Commissioner Walker and noted his “outstanding” work as a public servant. He then returned to speaking on Williams.
“I think Steve Williams is a servant leader,” Stalnaker said. “He has done an awful lot for this county and this community in his time of being here.”
Stalnaker commended Williams’ work on the Planning and Zoning Board, and told the crowd that Williams is the type of individual who he believes is one to think about what he can do for others.
Primary elections will be held in May. Following the primaries, there will be a general election. Williams announced his bid for Post 2 on Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2022.
