Askew, Franklin, Walker: The best in GA is in Houston Co.
Houston County has some of the best high school football talent all around the state. Three of the state’s top individual performers are right here in the county.
The top rusher in Georgia plays at Houston County. Senior running back Simeon Askew is currently the No. 1 rusher in the state by a significant margin. Askew has rushed for 1,449 yards through seven games this season, which is 352 more yards than the No.2 rusher in the state.
He’s bulldozing for 207 yards per game and averaging 7.3 yards every time he touches the rock. Askew recently received his first collegiate offer from Harding University and more college programs should be reaching out to the No. 1 workhorse in the state if they have any sense.
Another top individual performer is Veterans’ junior wide receiver Damare Franklin. Franklin has erupted as not just the best receiver on his team this season, but as one of the most dynamic receivers throughout the entire state.
Franklin is currently the No. 2 leading receiver in the state with 772 receiving yards through six games this season. He leads Class 5A in receiving and averages 128.7 receiving yards per game after not catching a single varsity pass last season. Now, Franklin is a certified threat to any defense he sees.
Franklin isn’t the only top receiver in Houston County. Warner Robins’ senior wide receiver Daveon Walker isn’t too far behind as the No. 5 receiver in the state with 681 yards through six games. Walker also has seven touchdowns with his yardage and recently received an offer from Vanderbilt University.
Walker established himself as one of the top receivers last season and has taken another step up this season. Walker can go off for over 100 yards and a couple of touchdowns in just one quarter of football, it’s happened before. Walker showed his true colors this season with 231 receiving yards and two touchdowns against a Lee County team that was ranked the No.1 team in Class 6A at the time.
These three athletes will likely continue their dominance through the year and should be praised for their achievements. Players like these prove that real talent is here in Houston County and eventually more college programs will realize it.
