Only one set of footprints

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Several years ago, Aaron Tippin recorded one of his most popular country songs that said in part, “You must stand for something or you will fall for anything.” This is certainly true, because if there is one thing in life that we must place our complete trust and faith in, it is that there is an all-powerful and ever present God, and He loves and cares for us. Most definitely, God does stand for something and He will not fall for anything.

Let me share with you a story this week about a man who had a dream. He dreamed that he was walking along the beach with the Lord. Across the sky, flashed scenes from his life. For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand, one was his and the other was the Lord’s.

When the last scene flashed before him, he looked back at the footprints and noticed that many times along the path there was only one set of footprints in the sand. He also noticed this happened during the lowest and saddest times of his life.

This really bothered him, so he questioned the Lord. “Lord, you said once I decided to follow you, you would walk all the way with me, but I noticed that during the most troublesome times of my life, there was only one set of footprints. I do not understand why. When I needed you most, you deserted me.”

The Lord replied, “My precious child, I love you and would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it was then that I carried you.”

Those of you who feel led to, after reading this column, please feel free to make copies of it and share it with your friends. When we look around us, we are amazed at the handiwork and power of God, to have the complete assurance of His Word and that He is still in control.

The next time you are faced with trials and tribulations, especially during those low times in your life, remember this week’s story, “One Set of Footprints.” One of our greatest joys in knowing God in a personal way is to know that He is faithful and will be there to carry us during those times when we need Him most. If you do not have this peace in your heart then believe me there is no greater joy in all the world.

Finally, Martin Luther once said, “He who believes in God is not careful for the morrow but labors joyfully and with a great heart. For he giveth his beloved, as in sleep. They must work and watch yet never be careful or anxious but commit all to him and live in serene tranquility with a quiet heart as one who sleeps safely and quietly.”
