Defunding the police will be on the ballot this November - David Perdue

Do we need police reform? Absolutely. But is defunding the police the answer? Absolutely not. The vast majority of police officers protect us honorably, but Joe Biden and the radical left have embraced the “defund the police” movement, a ludicrous proposal that will only drive our country toward lawlessness. As Joe Biden accepts the democratic nomination this week, it is clear that he will make this radical idea a reality.

Make no mistake: You won’t be safe in Joe Biden’s America.

These calls to defund the police could not come at a worse time in our country. Across the country, legitimate protests have been hijacked by violent

agitators, leaving a deadly crime spree in its wake.According to the Wall Street Journal, homicides have gone up 24% in America’s 50 largest cities since June.

In Atlanta, we have seen the consequences of this lawlessness. Over the Fourth of July weekend, 31 people were shot in Atlanta and five were killed, including an eight-year-old girl named Secoriea Turner. Homicides in Atlanta rose 240% over last year during May and June. Businesses, about half of which are owned by people of color in Atlanta, have been vandalized and looted.

This violence is absolutely unacceptable. However, it has not stopped democrats from vowing to defund the police at a time when we need them most.

Major cities, where we’re seeing anarchy, are democrat-run and have been for decades. In Minneapolis, the city council has already voted to defund the police. In Portland, the mayor and governor praised violent rioters who tried to burn down two federal buildings. If you want to see what America would be like under Joe Biden, look at Chicago, where on the Fourth of July, 87 people were shot, of which at least 17 died. That’s what you would have without law enforcement maintaining public safety and serving us all.  

My opponent, Jon Ossoff, said that police funding “has to be on the line.” Socialist Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez claimed that New York City’s proposed $1.5 billion cut to the NYPD didn’t go far enough. Kamala Harris, Biden’s pick for vice president, praised Los Angeles for stripping $150 million from their police budget.

The American people can see how ridiculous these proposals are. In fact, two-thirds of Americans oppose defunding the police.

Joe Biden is trying to appear moderate, but he would do nothing to stop his party from pushing through these radical ideas. He formed a Unity Task Force with socialists like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. New York Magazine wrote, “Joe Biden’s platform is more progressive than you think.” 

To figure out what Biden would do as president, you only have to look at what he did as vice president. During the Obama Administration, funding for our military was cut by 25%. This left our country unprepared to face the dangers of our world, and put our service members at risk. 

Why shouldn’t we believe he would do the same to our police forces? In fact, he has already claimed that he would “absolutely” redirect funding away from police forces. 

We need to come together and have serious debates about how to fix the problems in policing while ensuring the law enforcement officers who protect us all have the resources they need to preserve public safety. We could start by taking up Senator Tim Scott’s JUSTICE Act. That bill was a commonsense effort with many provisions that both parties agree on. However, Senate democrats voted against even debating it. They did not offer a single amendment.

This November, defunding the police will be on the ballot. Democrats have proven that they value pushing their radical socialist agenda over real solutions. The choice for voters couldn’t be clearer.
