Meet the Sports Editor
It wouldn’t sit right with me if I didn’t start this by thanking the people that helped me on my way to becoming sports editor of the Houston Home Journal.
My time in Valdosta will be cherished forever thanks to the players, coaches, staff, and all the people I met. I consider myself lucky to start my career around so much love and support.
With that said, I’m beyond excited to bring my experience to Houston County and look forward to getting acquainted with this community.
To know a little bit about me, I just graduated from Valdosta State University in December. I began writing in 2017 at VSU’s school newspaper then worked as a writer for the Valdosta Daily Times before getting the opportunity here.
I grew up around Atlanta as a fan of all sports, but basketball was my true love. Growing up I watched ESPN just as much as cartoons— always wondering how I could be one of those guys on TV just chatting about sports.
I didn’t start off in media or journalism when I hit college. I was a biology major, and I would say that was a mistake, but it was a pivotal lesson learned.
During my first semester I quickly knew becoming a veterinarian wasn’t for me, but I also didn’t have a plan B.
Then it hit me to just shoot for my dream job in sports television. So, I went for it.
First thing I did was research the people I admired. I saw they all started their careers as print sports journalists.
Not having a clue how to write for print, sports, or anything outside of an assigned essay, I decided to join the school newspaper. It was rough at first—but after some time of writing profoundly bland stories, I began to find my style and passion for journalism.
(Special thanks to my former sports editor that’s now a brother to me, Juston Lewis, for being a big part of my growth as a writer.)
Now three years later, I’m a sports editor.
I’m thankful for this opportunity and am driven to give Houston County some of the best sports coverage they’ve ever seen.
