Westfield baseball coach Rob Fitzpatrick to pull double-duty as new interim head football coach
There are dozens of differences between baseball and football. Enough to fill an entire column of a major newspaper in fact [See: famous Thomas Boswell Washington Post column on the subject]. At the Westfield School however, there will be one thing that will be the same, and that’s Rob Fitzpatrick. Fitzpatrick, the longtime successful Hornets head baseball coach was named the interim head football coach earlier this week.
According to a recent press release, he will resume football duties immediately. Fitzpatrick, whose son Michael, a senior and a three-time Houston Home Journal All-County catcher selection, will continue his work as the baseball coach as he helps ready the football team for the 2020 season.
“I am extremely excited to have the opportunity to lead the Westfield football program,” said Fitzpatrick. “My plan is to bring a ton of energy to the program and win football games.” The Hornets qualified for the GISA AAA state playoffs his season under former head coach Bruce Lane. “We have the athletes along with a great coaching staff,” added Fitzpatrick, who worked as an assistant coach last season.
“Nothing but good things to come for Westfield football.”
Fitzpatrick has coached baseball for over two decades, 12 of those at Westfield, where he has led the baseball program to a number of region championships and the 2011 GISA AAA state title during that time.
His hire will allow current players and multi-sport athletes remain comfortable coming into spring football. “We are excited to have Rob Fitzpatrick heading up our football program,” wrote Westfield Head of School William Carroll in a press release. “His excitement and energy, along with with his knowledge of football and successful leadership skills, will be a very positive influence for our students and staff.”
Kinsler joins Westfield football staff and faculty
Former Northside High School head football coach Kevin Kinsler was also named as an assistant coach and physical education/weight training teacher. Kinsler, who also was an assistant coach at Northside and the Eagles athletic director, coached at Northside for 30 years. “The addition of coach Kinsler to our athletic program is exciting as well,” wrote Carroll. “We believe his experience, reputation, and success as a coach will be a great asset to our football program.”
