Fromm doesn’t need to announce the obvious. He’ll be back at UGA.
Oft-injured Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa announced his intentions to enter the 2020 National Football League draft on Monday afternoon. In my opinion it was a no-brainer decision for the Heisman finalist, SEC champion and national championship winner. The kid could not have done more at Alabama and deserves to start getting paid for free. Having had multiple injuries, including ankle and hip injuries, it is a matter of time before he gets hurt again (God forbid) and if that happens it needs to be as a member of an NFL team with the best doctors and insurance in the world.
That said, there is another SEC title winning quarterback that is eligible to enter the draft, Georgia’s Jake Fromm. Will he? Won’t he? My answer to those questions is Fromm won’t leave Georgia and he doesn’t have to this does not need to make any announcements on ESPN like Tagovailoa did. Fromm doesn;t need to announce the obvious.
After a stellar three-year career at Georgia and a run as one of the top two, three quarterbacks in the best conference in college football (Note: This is not worth an argument) Fromm has answered any criticism he might have had coming out of high school or after his first two years as a starter. This season Fromm threw for a career-high 2,860 yards while passing for 24 touchdowns (compared to a paltry five interceptions, a career-low) and once again helped put the Bulldogs a step away from competing for a national title (See: Loss to LSU in SEC title game). Those accolades and statistics would most certainly guarantee Fromm a slot on someone’s draft board but he’s not entering the draft. Or at least I don’t believe he is. And I don’t believe he needs to. I can only assume playing quarterback at Georgia has it’s advantages and another year of playing with guys you came into school with, playing the Auburn’s, LSU’s Alabama’s and Florida’s of the world can’t hurt either. In comparison with the NFL the SEC can be just as big of a stage, especially when you’re the big Dawg (pun intended).
This year’s draft will have LSU star and Heisman trophy winner Joe Burrow, Washington and former UGA signal-caller Jacob Eason, and now Tagovailoa among the quarterback selections. There’s no room for Fromm and there doesn’t need to be. The 2021 draft is his target destination past college football. Don’t expect a press conference or too many tweets from Fromm regarding his decision to stay at school. That’s just not him.
