Longtime Houston County Board of Elections member Tony Robbins was recognized Tuesday by the county commissioners for 44 years of service.

The Board of Elections is responsible for conducting fair and impartial elections and registering citizens to vote. As Robbins was called to the front of the room to be recognized Tuesday, Commission Chairman Tommy Stalnaker said, “Anytime there is an election in this county, you can count on it being done fair, efficiently and correct by the laws that govern the elections in this state. It’s because of the caliber and quality of people that we have on the Board of Elections and have had for a number of years.”

Five members serve on the Board of Elections. One member is appointed by the Republican Party, one by the Democratic Party and three by the commissioners. Members are appointed for four-year terms. Barbara Waddle, who was appointed by the commissioners, serves as chairman.

Stalnaker said Robbins has been the pioneer of the board, along with Waddle.

“These people have led the Board of Elections for a long time and we’re deeply indebted for what they do for the citizens of this county,” he said.

On behalf of the General Assembly, Representatives Shaw Blackmon and Heath Clark presented Robbins with a resolution.

“It’s not often we get the opportunity to recognize such a distinguished career of service to the county,” Blackmon said, giving credit to Robbins’ family and the Waddles for recognizing him for his many years of service. “It’s our honor and privilege just to be able to present this resolution.”

Clark echoed Blackmon’s sentiments and commended Robbins and the Board of Elections for being very efficient.

“You’ve been there and worked with integrity and given a lot of work to this county and a lot of work that people will often overlook and take for granted, and we appreciate that,” he said.

Robbins is married to Warner Robins City Councilwoman Carolyn Robbins and they have three children and five grandchildren.

Robbins said he was appointed to the Board of Elections in 1973.

“It’s been my pleasure to work on the Board of Elections for these many years,” he said, noting he’s the Republican appointee. “We work for the people.”

He added, “We make sure that it’s done correctly, fairly and that we do our best to get people in and out.”

Robbins also commended Ted and Barbara Waddle, as well as thanked Blackmon and Clark and the commissioners for the recognition. Stalnaker then presented Robbins with a token of appreciation. He also assured that Robbins is not retiring. He said they just felt like it was time for them to acknowledge him for his many years of service.

“We would like to give you this as a small token that we really value your service,” Stalnaker said. “None of the commissioners worry about the Board of Elections because we know everything is going to be taken care of and done appropriately and you’re a huge part in that and have been for a number of years. Thank you for your service.”

Waddle said it’s an honor to work with Robbins.

“We appreciate everything Tony does for us. He keeps us in line,” she said, smiling.
