Thankful for many things that I do

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Being thankful is sometimes associated with the month of November when we have a holiday coming up that is closely associated with the word thankful.

We all really need to be thankful all year long and every day of our life. The nice warm weather we have enjoyed should remind us that there are many things around us to be thankful for. All we have to do is to stop and look around and we will see all sorts of things both large and small that we should be thankful for.

With that in mind, let me share with you in my column this week a few things that I am thankful for.

•A lovely spring day when the sky is blue and there is plenty of sunshine with little or no rain or wind.

•A high school spring football or college spring football game played under the conditions just written above.

•The fact that our local schools offer so many activities for our student-athletes to be involved in. Being a student should be more than just sitting at a desk several hours a day and it is great that our young people have so many activities to choose from. From sports to literary to FFA to 4-H, being involved in any of these activities helps prepare students for life beyond the classroom.

•The feeling of accomplishment after working in the yard for a day.

•Friday, which is the best day to be off if your job is normally a five-day work week Monday through Friday.

•The fact that it stays daylight longer now and I will never understand why when the time changes, it will be dark by 5:30 in the afternoon part of the year.

•For community newspapers like the one you are reading now and the privilege of owning 37 of them.

•For a comfortable pair of shoes that despite being worn for such a long time, they are still not worn out.

•The fact that the last time my wife bought a pair of pants for me, the size was much smaller.

•The person who remembers to say “thank you” when you do something for them or help them in some way.

•Country music from the 1980s and the fact that my car radio is programmed on eight country music stations and I can press a button when a commercial comes on.

•Recreation sports and the important lessons they can teach if those in leadership positions will use the opportunity properly.

•A Saturday afternoon nap after working in the yard mowing the grass or mowing the pasture with my tractor pulling the mower.

•A roof that does not leak when we get one of our violent Georgia thunderstorms.

•When I look at the weather forecast and see nothing but the symbol for sunshine.

•Saturday or Sunday afternoon play at The Master’s golf tournament being held in Augusta. Still working full-time at what I enjoy doing does not allow me to watch the tournament every day. My friend, Huey Alford, went to 49 Masters in a row before missing the 50th one. Another friend of mine, Johnny Paulk, who was the golf pro at the courses for many years on Jekyll Island, was an announcer on the 18th green of The Master’s golf tournament.

Finally, those of you who take the time to read my column each week that it is published, I thank you very much. I have been writing “From Where I Sit” for many years and thanks be to God I have not missed writing a column but only two or three times.
