Biggest basketball Weekend ever (until next weekend, of course)

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Starting on Friday night and carrying over into Saturday afternoon and into the evening, this weekend’s slate of basketball games has the chance to be the best ever. Let me explain.

From the high school ranks all the way to junior college (I don’t consider Macon “local” and I have been told that Fort Valley shouldn’t be considered “local” either. More on that later.), there are basketball games — both men’s and women’s, boys and girls — being played all over Houston County this weekend. By the way, I consider Friday after 5 p.m. the weekend and you should, too.

The Northside Eagles and Lady Eagles have both been playing well of late and will have a chance to make a significant dent in the AAAAAA-Region 1 standings with wins on Saturday. The Houston County Bears and Lady Bears will get the first crack at Valdosta, however, hosting them on Friday night at the house that Jake Fromm built (or at least that’s how folks make it seem whenever anything with the letters H-O-C-O is mentioned around these parts).

Editor’s Note: That’s why this type of writing is referred to as “column” writing or “opinion” writing.

Both HoCo teams could use a little boost after losing to Northside earlier this week, why make this weekend the moment that the season gets turned around.

The Veterans Warhawks and senior forward Josh Linder (he of the 46-point, 16-rebound game on Tuesday) look to play spoiler as they host the red hot (no pun intended, I swear) Warner Robins Demons on Friday.

The Demons and head coach Jamaal Garman haven’t lost a home game in over a month (to Perry) and are currently on a four-game road winning streak (excluding neutral sites). The Demonettes and head coach Tracy Fendley have one upped their male counterparts and every other team in the county; they haven’t lost a game all season. The Lady Warhawks, head coach Nicole Miranda and senior leading scorer Carrington Kee will have to be at their best if they want to give them their first loss of the season.

Perry and their 12-3 Panthers and Lady Panthers (both teams also have identical 3-0 region records) will be at Mary Persons on Friday night. I’m still racking my brain about whether to travel north to this game or stay in town and cover Warner Robins vs. Veterans. Either way, I can’t lose. The Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs, along with Upson-Lee, will be in Perry’s way when it comes down to time for a region title. Friday’s game will be a huge test for both clubs. I can’t wait.

The Central Georgia Tech Titans and Lady Titans will play at their Warner Robins campus on Saturday afternoon. There will be more than enough time to catch both games and make your way over to Northside for the Valdosta game. Could this weekend get any better? In a word: Yep. (that’s not a real word but you get my point).

I’m going to spend my Saturday afternoon at Morehouse College covering the Fort Valley State Wildcats game. I told you this weekend was going to get better.

If you’re reading this online on Friday evening, you only have a couple of minutes before tip-off; if you’re reading this on Saturday morning, you should get some rest. The best weekend of basketball in the history of Warner Robins (slight exaggeration) is halfway done.
