Westfield loses home opener 12-6 to non-region Southland Academy

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The Westfield School Hornets are coming off of a tough 12-6 home opening loss Friday night to visiting Southland Academy (GISA 3AAA, Americus, Ga.) with another quality opponent headed their way on Friday in the Valwood School Valiants (GISA 3AAA, Hahira).

The first game for head coach Jamey Watson may have ended in a loss but there were a number of quality signs for the Hornets. Junior quarterbacks Payton Black, the starter on Friday, and Wyatt Young both played well with plenty of room for improvement. Black had 30 yards on 14 carries along with Westfield’s only touchdown of the evening one-yard carry in the first quarter. Young rushed for 41 yards on eight carries while freshman fullback Craven Malcolm led the team in rushing with 74 yards on seven carries.

The Hornets defense held the Raiders scoreless through three quarters before giving up 12 points during the fourth.
