Northside’s Sheffield earns college chance at Andrew

Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

The dream of college athletics lives in so many who go through high school, so to reach that goal no matter what the level is a cause for excitement.

Such is the case for Northside High’s Taylor Sheffield. The softball shortstop for coach Meredith Belcher signed her letter-of-intent Friday to play for the junior college program at Andrew in Cuthbert.

“I’ve worked for this my whole life,” said Sheffield. “It’s been a dream since I was little.”

Sheffield was the top offensive and defensive player for Northside the past two seasons. Softball is, as she put it, her whole life. She said that’s where all of her friends are, which makes them a part of her family. For Sheffield, her coaches served as her role models.

“(Andrew) is a small school, and they are really close,” she said about the college program she will join and the main reasons she wants to go there. She does have the goal of using her opportunity for junior college softball to develop into a four-year player, but she doesn’t have any particular school where she wants to eventually transfer. Sheffield plans on studying nursing.
