The Museum of Aviation hosted a ceremony to remember Prisoners Of War and Missing In Action soldiers Thursday.

Retired Army Lt. Gen. Claude “Mick” Kicklighter was the guest speaker. He served in the 101st Airbourne and was commander of Army Forces in the Pacific.

Kicklighter’s speech was focused on the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War. He presented a special honor to two POWs and one MIA of the Vietnam War: Capt. Humbert “Rocky” Versace, Capt. Lance P. Sijan and Col. George “Bud” Day.

“We as a nation must continue to honor and help bring closure to the families whose loved ones were captured,” said Kicklighter.

Along with Kicklighter, another special guest spoke at the ceremony, Joanne Shirley. Shirley is the current Georgia State Coordinator for the National League POW and MIA families.

Her brother was declared MIA and still is to this day. Shirley said there are still more than 1,600 soldiers from the Vietnam War who have not been found.

“I will never give up on my dream of finding my brother, nor helping other families seek closure,” she said.
