Nearly one week after the Houston County Commissioners approved curb and gutter additions to the Langston Elementary School, the Houston County Board of Education seconded the motion to move forward with the project.

The project will cost $252,617 and will be paid for from the 2012 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax [SPLOST].

According to the Board of Education the $252,617 change order will be paid for out of the county SPLOST, while the construction for the rest of the Langston Elementary School is funded by the 2012 ESPOLST.

According to Scott Hill, Director of Facilities the additions will include sidewalks, curb and gutter, storm water piping for curb and gutter addition and another right turn lane from Lake Joy Road to Langston Road.

Robin Hines, Superintendent for the Houston County Board of Education said these additions are an illustration how the county will improve the quality of the new school.

“It’s an upgrade to the current project and was approved by the Board of Commissioners, who asked us to do this,” Hines said. “It is an example of us working together and we are very grateful for Chairman [Tommy] Stalnaker and whole board of commissioners. They do a great job.”

Completion of the project will be done in time for when the 2014-15 school year starts on July 31. Parish Construction will be handling the project.

In other business, the board also motioned to have Marianne Melnick served the 2014 calendar year as Chairman and Fred Wilson as Vice Chairman of the Board. Both Melnick and Wilson said it was honor to serve Houston County again.

“I appreciate the confidence that the board members have shown in myself to be vice chair[man] and in Dr. Melnick as [our] chair[man],” Wilson said.

“My expectations is to continue down the road of raising the bar as what we as board want for our students which is higher performance in all areas of their schooling. We want to work together as a team like we have been. We work together really good, talk about things individually as well as together. I want us to be good leaders and a team in the community.”

The board also passed the motion to approve of Billy Jerels and Jeff Grube as board attorneys. Hines said on Monday that he is grateful to have Jerels and Grube as board attorneys and the board has a great working relationship with both gentlemen.
