VHS nutrition students prepare variety of dishes

Veterans High School students in the Nutrition and Wellness classes were asked, “How do you choose what you eat?”

Responses given included: influences by family and friends, TV, culture, traditions, money and food available. Students then discussed how their culture, ethnicity and family traditions played a role in foods chosen at home.

Living in the “international city” and surrounding area, there are students from different cultures and ethnic groups in school.

Students were asked to prepare and bring a food dish from home that had a specific meaning to their family. Some students brought food from their culture, while some brought traditional food typically eaten at certain holidays, and others brought family recipes.

Donna Brown, Veterans Nutrition and Wellness teacher, commented, “What started out as a ‘food sampling’ turned into a ‘family sharing’ experience. This was a good lesson that the students seemed to learn from and also enjoy.”
