All of Veterans High’s seven runs Thursday at home scored from the power of two hitters: Kaylee Albritton and Katlyn Winner. Both seniors hit a home run as the Warhawks turned back the challenge of county neighbor Perry High 7-1 to improve to 2-0 in Region 2-AAAA.

Albritton also had a double in the game to account for five RBI. Winner’s two-run home run occurred in the bottom of the first.

With that long ball, Veterans held a 2-0 lead through five innings, and in the fifth Albritton brought in two runs. Her other three RBI happened in the sixth.

Avery Lamb pitched all seven innings scattering six hits and striking out two. The shutout was broken by Amber Garrett’s RBI in the top of the sixth.

Payton Stallworth also doubled in the game, and Lamb made two hits from the plate. Of Perry’s six hits, five were singles while Melissa Eckman doubled.

The loss was Perry’s first in the region. Both teams tried to play non-region games at home Tuesday, but weather pulled them off the field.

HOUSTON GOES 11

Houston County’s Bears were able to get a full game in Tuesday playing a non-region tilt at West Laurens High. It was almost two full games as the Bears and Raiders needed 11 innings to decide an 11-8 win for Houston.

This was a 1-1 game after seven complete and each team scored one time in the eighth. Both put two runs up in the 10th, so Houston’s winning edge in the 11th was 7-4.

Carson Carriker, Kelly Warner and Hayley Tierce all had six official at-bats. West Laurens only had three hits to 15 for the Bears. Emily Hittenger pitched the entire time (no GHSA restrictions on softball pitching) giving up one earned run and throwing 174 pitchers to 46 batters. (West Laurens’ starter had 153 pitches, 10 2/3 innings).

Warner had three hits with one RBI, and both Tierce and Kenton Thomas doubled twice with three RBI between them. Taylor Brown batted home two runs, Carriker doubled and singled for an RBI and Amber Coy had two hits with one RBI.
